What is "C0 (C-Zero) water repellency"?
C0 water-repellent treatment does not use PFAS (perfluorinated compounds), which are a concern for their impact on the environment and human health.
This is a highly safe water repellent. Unlike C8 and C6 water repellents, it has virtually no impact on health or the natural environment.
It's also attracting attention in the global apparel industry.
While maintaining water-repellent properties, it is characterized by low oil-repellent properties and dry-cleaning resistance.
Adapting to an era demanding environmental considerations, it is gaining popularity as a sustainable and safe option.
Proper care is essential to extend the lifespan of the product.
What are PFAS (organic fluorine compounds)?
PFAS are compounds known as "forever chemicals" because they are difficult to break down and tend to accumulate in the body.
Long-term exposure to these substances raises concerns about adverse health effects. In particular, PFOA (perflu-oroctanoic acid), found in C8, has been linked to potential carcinogenicity and is now subject to regulation. Some C6 substances are also regulated, and restrictions on their use were strengthened in Japan from 2024. They accumulate in the air and soil, raising concerns about their impact on drinking water and the food chain. Against this backdrop, C0 water-repellent coatings, which do not use PFAS, are attracting attention.
Health effects of PFAS
PFAS are known to accumulate in the body and take many years to be eliminated. For example, the half-life of PFOS is 5 years and that of PFOA is 3 years, meaning that complete elimination requires an even longer period. Therefore, continued intake is considered to increase health risks. The main risks announced by the European Environment Agency (EEA) include thyroid disease, elevated blood cholesterol levels, liver disease, kidney cancer, testicular cancer, low birth weight, and weakened immunity (in the fetus). In addition, risks with moderate certainty include an increased risk of miscarriage.
Pregnancy-induced hypertension, decreased sperm count, breast cancer, and obesity have been reported. These effects can have particularly significant impacts on fetal and child development, raising widespread concerns about long-term health.
